Stunning Wadi Musa, Jordan at Night

When people visit Petra, Jordan, they usually base themselves in nearby Wadi Musa. This is a beautiful, hilly little desert city with a population of approximately 7,000. Wadi Musa is filled with everything to meet the needs of the tourists who come to town to visit Petra, the country’s most famous tourism site.

I’ve stayed in Wadi Musa a few times and always enjoying its classic Middle Eastern buildings, all colored in various shades of brown. My last time in Wadi Musa, I got to see the city in a different light, literally. One night, my friend Mohammed drove me up to a mountaintop overlooking the town. The nighttime view was stunning.

The Mars-like terrain of the cliff in the foreground where I was standing. That Mars appearance seguing into the orange glow of Wadi Musa all it up at night. A backdrop of dark mountains peeking up through a vanishing sunset. All topped off by the uncommon sight of a Middle Eastern sky thick with clouds. The scene was incredibly gorgeous. It was one of the most striking nighttime views I’ve ever witnessed.

It was difficult to choose which photo of this scene to publish here for my photo of the day. After I studied them all, I ended up choosing this one because I like the angle at which I shot it. Plus I think the photo has just the right balance of each of the elements I mentioned above. I did not edit this photo at all. I titled it Jordanian City at Night.

Wadi Musa Jordan at night, as seen from a rocky cliff above. The lights of the city are orange, the sky cloudy and the vanishing sunset is barely visible.
